Upstairs on the 4th floor our stellar Library Technology Services staff have put together a display of DVDs that will make you leap out of your loafers, or crocs, or those toe shoe things. Anyway, they are SCARY (or funny, or scary and funny)! Stop up and grab one or more for the Halloween season!
Every Halloween, millions of Americans get in the spirit of the holiday by dressing up, decorating their homes and offices and telling scary stories. The EIU Philosophy department is joining the festivities with a discussion by a panel of philosophy professors on the existence of the Devil.
We thought we’d join the party and provide a few books, DVDs and reference resources on the topic. As you might imagine, there is a lot to choose from. We’ve only just scratched the surface.
The books and films listed below are available in Booth in various locations. Review the library catalog for details.

A special musical story time is planned at Booth Library at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 31.
The free program will include spooktacular live music by members of the Eastern Illinois University music department and readings for all ages by the Ballenger Teachers Center staff. Participants will then be allowed to experiment with musical instruments as part of an “instrument petting zoo” presented by the Eastern Crossbones and Professor Erin Wehr from the University of Iowa.
Visitors are encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes and join in the fun. Activities will take place in the reference room in the northwest corner of the library.
The program will be presented by the EIU music department and coordinated by staff at the Ballenger Teachers Center at Booth Library. For more information about the Ballenger Teachers Center, visit the website here or call 217-581-8442.
Don’t just bleed blue – read blue! In celebration of EIU Homecoming 2015, we’ve put together a list of varied items from Booth Library’s collections which all have one thing in common. Can you guess what it might be?
Check out the corresponding display in the library’s 3rd floor south corridor (close by the Circulation Desk) to borrow these and other blue titles.

Were you there? Do you know someone who was? Reference News, (shining light on the gems in our collections) has published a call to crowdsource the Million Man March pictures stored in the CARLI Digital Collections.
Friday, October 16, 2015 marks the twentieth anniversary of the Million Man March. On that date in 1995, nearly as many African-American men from across the United States convened on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., drawing attention to and demonstrating unity against the economic and social injustices faced by the African-American community.
Proposed by Louis Farrakhan, leader of the Nation of Islam, the historic event was intended in part to counter media stereotypes by promoting a more positive image of African-American men. Attendees pledged personal responsibility for their roles within their families and society.
These images come from a collection of more than 900 photographs taken by Eugene B. Redmond, a poet, scholar, and professor at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (pictured above at the march with MC Hammer). The photos can be viewed online in the EBR Million Man March digital collection, which visually documents Redmond’s experience before, during, and after the event. The digital exhibition “Path to Visible Glory” features additional materials from the Redmond Collection (now housed at SIUE’s Lovejoy Library), including manuscripts, audio files, and ephemera.
In commemoration of the march, SIUE Library and Information Services has invited the public to contribute information about the event and those in attendance by adding tags to the digital collection. To participate, visit http://www.siue.edu/lovejoylibrary/tas/MMM_20th.htm. Tagging will be open through the end of November.
To learn more about the Million Man March, listed below are highlights from the Booth Library collection. Additional resources can be found via I-Share, our consortial partners providing EIU library users with access to more than 85 academic libraries across Illinois.
