Celebrating Darwin Day

Darwin Day recognizes the achievements and contributions of Charles Darwin to science and humanity each year on his birthday, February 12. Events commemorating Darwin take place internationally, including at Eastern Illinois University. This year at EIU, events will be held Feb 10-12 and will include a film and panel discussion and two guest lectures. All events are free and open to the public.

JSTOR Global Plants database now available

Booth Library is now offering a trial of JSTOR Global Plants! It is the largest database of digitized plant specimens and a locus of international research and collaboration. The database is available here.

All patrons are encouraged to take a look, but hurry! This free trial will last only through Feb. 15, 2019.

On the Shoulders of Giants, 50 years since the Moon landing

The most recent exhibit and program series here at Booth Library will officially open on January 24, 2019. On the Shoulders of Giants is a celebration of the 50th anniversary of NASA’s Moon landing in 1969. The NASA 50th anniversary website provides pictures, videos and audio of the Apollo mission. Check out an interview from the New York Times, held with the three astronauts, a week before the launch. Be sure to come and check out the exhibits and program series here at Booth Library to find out more about this historic event.

Darwin Day Display

In honor of Darwin Day, February 12, 2019, we have set up a display table in the 3000 S hallway about using DNA to elucidate our ancient and modern ancestry. Darwin Day is a worldwide celebration of Charles Darwin’s birthday, February 12, 1809, and his contributions to science. The International Darwin Day website has a page showcasing the different events celebrating Darwin Day around the world, three of which are happening on the Eastern Illinois University campus at the Doudna Fine Arts Center on February 10, 11, and 12 from 7pm-8pm.

Students: Get honored for your research!

Eastern Illinois University students who have used Booth Library resources to enhance their research are encouraged to enter the library’s Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creativity program.

The program is open to all Eastern Illinois University students. If campus finances allow, cash prizes of up to $300 will be awarded, in addition to certificates of recognition.

The student entry may be a written work, art piece, exhibit, musical work, documentary, performance or another format.

The 2019 guidelines can be found here. All entries must be submitted electronically. For more information, call 581-6061.

The deadline to enter is noon March 22. Recipients will be selected by April 5, and the winners will be honored during a reception on April 17. Works submitted for competition must have been completed within the last 12 months.

These awards are not intended to duplicate or replace any other standing campus awards. Selected entries will become a part of Booth Library’s Student Research and Creativity Collection.
