Darwin Day 2020 events and materials
Posted on January 30th, 2020
Several activities are planned at Eastern Illinois University to celebrate Darwin Day the week of February 10-14.
Darwin Day is an annual and internationally celebrated event occurring on Charles Darwin’s birthday (Feb. 12). The mission of the International Darwin Day Organization is to “inspire people throughout the globe to reflect and act on the principles of intellectual bravery, perpetual curiosity, scientific thinking, and hunger for truth as embodied in Charles Darwin.” It is meant to be “a day of celebration, activism, and international cooperation for the advancement of science, education, and human well-being”.
All events of this year’s Darwin Day program at EIU are organized around the theme “Climate Change and Evolutionary Crisis.”
Schedule of events
All events will take place at 7 p.m. in the Lecture Hall of EIU’s Doudna Fine Arts Center:
- Sunday, Feb. 9: Film and panel discussion: “Planetary” (2016) directed by Guy Reid, featuring panelists Drs. E. Bolinger, R. Colombo, C. Craig and B. Kronenfeld
- Monday, Feb. 10: “Evolution in a Rapidly Changing World: How Humans Influence Darwinian Evolution in Contemporary Landscapes,” presented by Dr. Jill Anderson, Odum School of Ecology and Department of Genetics, University of Georgia/Athens
- Tuesday, Feb. 11: “Climate Change and Environmental Sex Determination: An Unnatural Future?” presented by Dr. Fredric Janzen, Department of Ecology, Evolution and Organismal Biology, Iowa State University/Ames.

Study rooms can now be reserved!
Posted on January 8th, 2020
Students: You asked, and we delivered! Over the years Booth has had many patron requests that our fourth-floor study rooms be made available by reservation. We now have a system in place to do that.
Study rooms may be reserved by groups of two or more people for up to two hours per day. Unreserved study rooms will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note that our study rooms are intended for group use; rooms cannot be reserved for individual use.
Only current EIU students with a valid Panther Card may reserve a room. Reservations for a group study room can be made up to two weeks in advance.
Rehearsal and viewing rooms on the fourth floor also can now be reserved.
