Students who need tips for conducting research are encouraged to attend free workshops at Booth Library.
Seminar 1: Researching the Literature with Steve Brantley will be offered at 7 p.m. Feb. 25 in Room 4450 of the library.
Topics to be covered are:
– What are your online research destinations?
– How do you know when you have enough?
– Identify key journals and key databases.
– Understand controlled vocabularies and how they can benefit your research.
– Learn about open access, open research, and alternative sources for research.
Seminar 2: Organizing your References Using Citation Management Software with Kirstin Duffin will be offered at 7 p.m. March 3 in Room 4450 of the library.
Topics to be covered are:
– Save your sources to one convenient location and access via the cloud.
– Create formatted citations and your reference section in seconds (really!).
– Understand the software options and features in Mendeley and Zotero.
– Export citation information using library databases.
Seminar 3: Submitting your Thesis with Ellen Corrigan will be offered at 7 p.m. March 10 in Room 4450 of the library.
Topics to be covered are:
– How to submit your thesis online via The Keep
– What happens to your thesis to achieve certification by the Graduate School
– How to order personal or departmental print copies of your thesis

Census 2020 is here. Be counted!

As mandated by the U.S. Constitution, every 10 years the census counts every person living in the United States, once and only once. This month, every household in the U.S. will be receiving an invitation to respond to the 2020 Census, with the option to respond online or via mail or phone. Individual responses are kept strictly confidential.
** Note for EIU students: the Census has special procedures to count people living in a variety of residence situations. If you have been living in a Residence Hall or Greek Court or University Apartments, EIU has already talked with the Census Bureau and told them who is living on campus. If you live in a Greek Chapter House that’s not part of university housing, or if you have been living in other off-campus housing, then you’ll need to fill out the census form. Although you may be residing elsewhere temporarily due to the coronavirus pandemic, you should fill it out using your local Charleston address, as under normal circumstances you would be physically living in Charleston on April 1st. You live here over 50% of the year, so you will put your Charleston address in for the census. Please see the EIU Census FAQ for more information. Information provided by the Census is used for:
- Determining how many seats each state gets in the House of Representatives
- The distribution of federal funds and grants
- Drawing the boundaries of legislative districts within states
- Viewing how populations have changed over time
- Local community and business initiatives
- And lots more
Booth Library has resources available to help you learn more about Census 2020. Stop by the display table on the 3000 South level (main floor) to view informational posters, pick up handouts answering commonly asked questions on the census, and even get details on applying to be a census taker.

Students: Enter our research competition! DEADLINE EXTENDED!

EIU students who have used Booth Library resources to enhance their research are encouraged to enter the library’s Awards for Excellence in Student Research and Creativity program.
The program is open to all EIU students who are/were enrolled during the current academic year. Cash prizes will be awarded.
The student entry may be a written work, art piece, exhibit, musical work, documentary, performance or another format.
The 2020 guidelines can be found on Booth Library’s website at https://library.eiu.edu/awardsforexcellence/. All entries must be submitted electronically through EIU’s scholarship portal, https://eiu.academicworks.com/.
THE DEADLINE TO ENTER IS APRIL 1. Works submitted for competition must have been completed within the last 12 months.
Selected entries will become a part of Booth Library’s Student Research and Creativity Collection.
